Internationally, it is recognized that Net-Zero buildings are at the forefront of development in the sustainable construction sector and will be essential to guide the industry's evolution toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions and avoiding the worst impacts of climate change. European countries already have legislation requiring new buildings to become Net-Zero in the coming years, and programs such as the Living Building Challenge are demonstrating construction and operation within the strictest limits. The World Green Building Council, through local GBCs, is leading efforts to develop and implement Net-Zero certifications in various countries worldwide to challenge leaders in construction sustainability.

To begin the process of developing a Net-Zero certification for Brazil, GBC Brasil convened a Net-Zero committee to start discussions and develop key parameters for an eventual certification. To inform the committee and guide the conversations, Mitsidi was hired by the Instituto Clima e Sociedade (iCS) to develop a report on low-carbon buildings in Brazil.Net-Zero committee
